Default O2 sensor and Sidepipes?

whats up,

I just purchased a AEM 30-4100 Wideband controller and gauge set up for my vette. I'm having my buddy weld in a bung for O2 sensor something this week. I was wondering which bank would be best for mounting the o2 sensor?, I was thinking drivers side on inner side of header collector. One issue that I might run into is with clearance between my hooker sidepipe header and the rocker molding. directions say I should mount o2 at 10deg angle downward, i think i might only have room to mount it straight horizontal or might even have to mount it slight angled upward!

Anyone here have hooker sidepipes with o2 installed?

Chris McDonald aka 69MyWay did.

I believe he had his pointed straight up and had the tube go through one of the gills on his '69. Looking at you sensor makes me think he had a 90* tube screwed into the bung as a sleeve.

There should be pictures somewhere here on CF or over at Digitalcorvettes, otherwise there was a picture at the Corvette museums website..look for the Sharkfest and scroll through the pictures there.

I found this picture of Chris's '69 at the museum site but it was listed as the 2002 Labor Day gathering.

I put mine on the drivers side at just under the 3 o'clock position. It barely clears the frame/rocker. I used a slightly shorter (1/4" I think) bung to give my self a little mor clearance. You can barely see it from straight above. Mine is set at 90* in the collector, but an angle will get you even more clearance from the frame.

I ordered a shorter bung as well, its the summit brand bung. the o2 is suppose be at a 10deg or greater but its just not possible with sidepipes. Do you have any issues with o2 readings? I think I'm going to do actually what you did, with 3 o'clock mounting position.

Thats a really nice vette and I've seen plenty of pictures of it, but I dont think that set up would look right on my car.

Why do you need or want an O2 sensor? Required?

I just got done mounting my SS headers and side pipes this last Saturday. I put the O2 sensor in the number three cylinder primary about 18" from the exhaust port. This was per Hooker Header recommendation. I am using the stock 2 wire non heated O2 sensor.

The sensor can read in any position without variation. The issue is the long term effect of condensation damaging the sensor after you shut the car off.

PS Somebody at Hooker must be smarter than I am. Never seen O2's in a primary pipe except on an engine dyno when there were 7 more and we were logging from 3500 rpm and up. At idle and light cruise that reading is going to be bouncing around like crazy.

Larry, that looks great! How did you tackle the AIR lines from the smog pump? Did you add fittings to the primary tubes, or did you just cap the lines? Any pics would be greatly apprecited, because I am going to be adding sidepipes to an 82 later this coming summer. Thanks!

I need to install the O2 sensor in header collector for my new wideband o2 controller and gauge. its a tool that reads AFR ratio at all times. So I can tune my motor at idle, cruise, heavy cruise, and wot. I'm hoping to get AFR set for best mpg at cruise and best perf at WOT.

I remember that Norval put sensors on each of the primaries but I think he stopped posting before he posted the outcome. Maybe someone knows what he found? His engine wasn't exactly stock though.

No problems at all with the readings. I was told by Innovate Motorsports that this is the best location for accurate readings. I was also told that the closer you get to the 6 o'clock position, the more likely it is to foul the sensor from condensation (3 o'clock should be fine). But with my limited driving and with it being heated - I havent had a problem in 2 years with it.

Agree with the above comments on the positioning of the sensor in the collector. I would put bungs in both collectors and then plug the one not in use. That would let you monitor both banks. Then later, get another sensor and hook them up via a toggle switch for back-to-back comparisons.
