Has anyone removed thier shifter (the whole unit) without dropping the trans? I have a hurst comp plus in my 68 that needs a little attention and I really don't want to drop the tranny.

No, but I replaced a complete factory shifter in a c2 (64 or 65) small block without too much hassle, and without removing the trans. Can't be too much difference.
did this in my 69. no need to drop the tranny at all. i think for one or two bolts though, you need to go at them from inside the car. oh, and take off the shifter handle.
Good to hear. I have the console out and the shift stick removed so that I can replace the lower boot, and fit it with the right stick and spacer to eliminate hitting the console with the stick when I put it in reverse.( PO had the wrong shift stick in it) I figure I have it this far, might as well freshin up the shifter itself while I'm at it.
No need to drop the trans -- 1 bolt on the top removed easily from inside the car and 1 from the bottom on the stock shifter -- Hurst should be the same. I found it easier to disconnect the linkage friom the transmission first to aid in getting to the lower shifter bolt -- it is tight!
I usually pre-adjust a Comp Plus shifter on the bench then drop it in through the top (rods and all.) You have to make sure rods havent spun too far while getting it into place but, yes you can pull the entire assembly through the opening of the console
I also remeber I made the 7/16ths bolt at the top a custom length to allow removal when shift plate is mounted to transmission, a stock Hurst one may be too long to allow removal in car, you may have to remove the transmission mount to allow room for removal of the top bolt.
Looks like I will have enough room for the top bolt. I need to remove the mounting plate too, because from looking at the hurst instructions on line, the PO also has the mounting plate in the wrong position on the trans(too far back) and compensated by cutting and welding the shift stick. I discovered all this when I pulled the console to see why the blower fan wasn't working ( that's a whole nother story) bubba bubba bubba....why must you haunt me so......
I got the 7991 stick and standard 3/8 spacer. I'm not sure how well it fits yet because I need a new shift rod( my 1-2 rod is too short) The PO had the shifter mounted in he wrong holes on the trans and now the one rod is too short. I'll let you know how it works out when I mount it.
