I'm pulling the engine to get my 70 roadster painted. Do I need to pull tranny also, or will rear engine mount support it? It doesn't look like it would be too easy to put a temp support under the front, across the chassis. Help appreciated.

why are you pulling the engine in order to get the body painted. The rear mount will not support the transmission by itself.

Thanks for the reply. Kind of figured that would be the case. I finally decided to pull the engine because I want to paint the engine, and figure it'd be easier on an engine stand. But,mainly I want to clean up and paint the engine compartment. I'm doing a pretty complete restoration (but not frame-off), and right now there's nothing but the motor mounts connecting the engine to rest of the car. I know it's not really a big deal to drop the tranny, but just one more operation I was hoping to avoid. Since I got started on this I realize that one thing leads to another, and another, and.......

Just yank the whole motor and transmission. That is easier than seperating the two and trying to mate them together back in the car.

I'm going to pull them as a unit and then separate them so I can bolt the engine to the stand. Agree that it'll be easier than separating and rejoining under the car. Thanks. BTW, notice you're from Marlton - spent about 25 years in Medford. Cheers!

I paid $44 for this engine cradle at Northern Tool, then modified it so that the bellhousing (and tranny) can be attached to the engine. Otherwise the rear brackets would need to attach where 2 bellhousing bolts are. Worked great for painting and transporting my BB after rebuild.

Hi fr,
Your picture made me wonder... was the clutch lever in place when the engine was painted?
I see the boot in the AIM, but not the lever. Was the lever put in place at Tonawanda?
Regards,
Alan

Hi Alan
The bellhousing was attached. I'm not sure about the tranny...why wouldn't they have installed the clutch lever? I've seen a picture of the engine paint line in '69 and from what I could tell, they were spraying the engine with a garden hose. No face masks, took only a few minutes, many runs, drips and errors.
