I took it to a muffler shop and they welded a few spots that they said had small leaks.
Seems like it could be a little quieter but hard to say.
From reading in this forum it seems putting insulation under the carpet to help minimize sound isn't really going to help if you tend to have the T tops off a lot. I do.
"Glass Pack" mufflers will likely be louder. If you're running stock manifolds, stock pipe all the way back to mufflers, and out tail pipes, your done. If you still want it quieter, try going to stock mufflers you can get from any of the vette part dealers. Driving with the tops off, as it would in any car is going to give you alot of wind noise, but the exhaust system isn't going to help that. BTW, the 76 in stock trim isn't a monster performance car (no offense to the 76 folks out there!) what are you comparing the sound of this car to when you say it's so loud?
I have a rebuilt 350 that supposedly has 400HP, I have an Edelbrock performer RPM intake manifold, holly 600CFM carb, stock exhaust manifolds, 2.14 inch exhaust pipes (true dual separate pipes), no CAT convert and Dynomax Super turbo mufflers. Also, turn down tips.
As for the noise, I'm not concerned about the wind noise, I feel like there is a droning noise coming from behind me when I drive. I feel like if there was something I could put in the back behind my seats to quiet that down i would be happy.
Maybe putting some dynomat behind my seats and in the back would help? Since that is where the sound seems to be coming from?
If you have a droning / resonance situation going on then other than changing mufflers, some type of crossover is probably your best bet to get rid of it.

Sakins, this helps! A droning is a different critter than just a loud exhaust! DRIVESHAFT is right, try something like this (it worked for me!):
This thread needs to SPEAK UP ....I can't hear a thing anybody is saying...
I'm already pretty much deaf from too many years of rock . You need to sit in a BB vette with set of side exhaust to appreciate how quiet your L82 really is. I'm the only other thing a biker hears at a stoplight besides his hog
I love the sound of a open BB exhaust just comming to life.
Wow, cross over pipes? So you found this helped with the droning noise in the rear with your vette? Can I just have a muffler shop cut my pipes and install it?
LS4, I hear what you're saying (I think)..:-)
Thanks to dmoroso for making things clear, guess I was doing a bad job explaining it. What I'm really talking about is the droning noise...
Yep the cross over helps reduce the droning that can occour at different RPMs, and a muffler shop should be able to install it.
Hey, LS4 Pilot, I know what you mean. My Softail had Vance and Hines straight shots on it and with the compression I was running, it'd echo at an idle when I was at a stop light! And I love the sound of my BB at idle, or WOT!! As for rock, well, I'm a drummer and when we're on stage, it always better when your turned up to 11!!
I was annoyed at how loud my Corvette was when I bought it. Several months later after I noticed the weather stripping was bad and a large piece of it was missing on the driver's door I replaced it and the car was considerably quieter afterwards. Maybe not likely your problem, but worth checking.
Make sure no part of the muffler or exhaust pipe is resting on the frame or any body part. It will be very loud if so. Make sure your huffler hangars in the back have good thick rubber strap insulators between the clamped area and where the hangar bolts to the frame. Go to Corvette Central and order a new system and spend 20 bucks on two new muffler hangars if yours are bad. Get the 2" pipes if you want quieter. My car came with a custom exhaust sytem that Bubba built: 2-1/2" pipes and some sort of loud mufflers. Sounded good at idle and parking lot putting around - but was too loud. I went with a Corvette Central 2-1/2" system. It bolted up easily with no problem. I had to change the center exhaust hangar to a 2-1/2" bracket - that was easy. The bracket was 25 bucks. I am impressed with Corvette Central exhaust. Not so much with Allen's Stainless. Search my threads for a good writeup.

I changed out the mufflers to middle of the line as far as sound. Did this last fall. I think it is a little quieter but still my ear are ringing after taking her for a ride.
Why is my car so loud?
I'm thinking of pulling out the carpet and installing insulation that will help cut down on the noise. Carpet is old anyway, could stand to be replaced.
Anyway, what do you recommend? Is there a specific type of insulation you have tried and works well?
Good point on exhaust touching the metal of the frame. Mine does, right in the middle of the car. Here is a pick. what should I replace this with? How do I fix this?
If you don't have a Cat, that is making it louder too. A Cat Converter is like a 3rd muffler -- i bought mine without one but put on a hi-perf Cat when i moved to Colorado.............car got too quiet. When i move up to true duals, the cat is going on the shelf !!!!!
Try to loosen or remove that clamp and make sure the pipe can't rattle against the frame. If the clamp is needed to control movement than you may need to shim a piece of aluminum or high heat something between the clamp and pipe to center it in the frame hole. I don't remember a clamp being there on my 75 vette. But that was 15 years ago

good point. I have the factory bead cat on mine, might be why it's so quiet with the Dynomax muffs.
I'm installing CCE system tomorrow with the Magnaflow mufflers. I hope it really makes a difference in sound

I think the drone at 30-35 mph my flowmasters have (irritating to my human ear) is from a harmonic set up by the air flow of the exhaust within the chambering system of those particular mufflers. That exhaust hits baffles, tumbles, flows, etc. and like hitting a drum at certain volumes and frequencies it sets up a resonance or harmonic and that's what I refer to as the drone in mine that disappears above 35 mph. I didn't have them put an x pipe in mine but may go back and have it done if it changes the flow enough to remove that harmonic. Go faster and the sound changes and is behind me but a different sound with different speed and volume of exhaust in the pipes and chambers. Maybe I'll go check flowmasters site and see if they have anything on it re reading this thread.
