Default Project help

hey guys,

I officially started my 73 project today

the car is on jacks and i was inspecting the chassis. Everything is good except for one slight problem. The chassis under the driver's side is rusty and the previous owner covered it with tar. any suggestions of how I can fix this?

Thanks

Hello
That looks like a serious problem. You are probably going to get some replies along the lines of replacing your frame, which would be some serious work ahead.

I dont know how you could weld up a frame support on that without taking the body off.

I'm looking to see what others who have this type of experience can suggest for you.

Hi S1,
I think you need to first clear off all the foreign material so you can see just how far and how involved the rust/damage actually is.
Then you'll be able to get some suggestions on how to proceed with the repair.
The damage is in a location where serious rust is not usually a problem. Perhaps a previous accident?
Good Luck as you get going!
Regards,
Alan

Had you planned on doing a frame off? Sorry, this is really bad. What shape is the bird cage in?

That appears to be a lot of rust for an area that is not prone to rust. I can only imagine what the rest of the frame looks like.
The frame needs to be inspected thoroughly. And I feel that the body will be coming off before this issue is resolved.
Good Luck!

Body off Frame replacement....what you see is just the tip of the iceburg
And if the frame is that bad you are almost gauranteed to have body mount/rocker channel issues

Wow!! well the rest of the Chassis looks clean! there or no rust spots anywhere else, except for that section.

It has been on an accident before.

Not that bad. Have a welder cut out the bad metal and weld in new metal. Done!

One scenario is leak from the firewall down to body mount #2 then into the frame. Most of the time when there is rust here it's fully rotten on top.
Inspect you body mount #2 front inside the door pillar and try to poke a long screwdriver inside you frame hole to assert the state of the top of the frame.
Clean all you can on repost picture.

If the worst happens, will I be able to buy a chassis for different year and still be able to use it?

You can sure do a frame off resto and chassis, there is a bunch of restoration
threads (including mine) that will help you figuring if you're up to the task.
Frame can come from another year, some will fit directly, some will need modifications.
The search tool is your best friend, start digging the forum and read read read.
I was pretty much clueless about cars one year ago, learned everything there.

Search especially for "birdcage rust".
If you have frame rust AND birdcage rust, prepare yourself for redoing the whole car, or maybe stop right there and look for another Vette.
I'm considering the worst case scenario here, it may not be that bad actually.

Me and My dad agreed that we are going to make it a frame off restoration. I'm excited for it but at the same time nervous about embarking on this task.

Guys,

I'm giving serious thought to the Frame off restoration and Frame Replacement. I found a 74 frame in good condition.

Will it fit my 73 or are the suspension points different on the 74 frame?
And can i mount my rear bumper on the 74 frame?

The frame should work but you will need to change the very back end. You should be able to cut off the rear of your frame and weld it in place to make the 74 frame fit the rear bumper attachments.

Wait until you get if of and inspct the rust areas. A good fabricator can do almost anything with steel, a plasma cutter, and a tig welder.
While you're at it, the factory welds can be added to and additional support added also. Just don't jump the gun till you now for sure.
