Default 1979 Corvette Backfiring

I recently changed the spark plugs and wires on my 79 Corvette. Now all the car does is backfire at idle and when you try to drive it. The car will not gain too much speed because at about 3500 RPM the car backfires constantly and the engine begins to sputter.

Could this be the firing order or the distrubutor?

My guess is you either have several grounding out or you have two of your plug wires switched the Cly # is embossed on the intake manifold follow the wires one at a time starting with the #1 Cly.In the future to keep this from happening do what we all do, one at a TIME.

Well that is the funny thing I did replace them one at a time... so I don't know if the timing is off on the distrubtor or if the distrubtor cap has gone bad...

There's a small chance you shifted the cap on the dist. Or turned it and threw off the timing. If your sure the wires are right take the cap of taking note that the hold down were engaged and the cap was seated properly on the Distibutor. Flip the cap and with a light look for hairline cracks in the cap.
