While steering column out to replace it, pulled down the left and right dashes and removed the top dash pad to re-dye. Got it all back together, then realized I had a problem with the new column. Fast forward to now: Took it all apart again to replace the clock while getting my column rebuilt. Also got the center console replaced (what a pain) and am now trying to get the parking brake console to fit up to the center console, but am realizing that the center console won't push forward enough to line up the screw holes in the console and parking brake console where they should mate up to the tunnel sheet metal. So I had to remove the left and right dash pads again and unfasten the center instrument panel. I notice that the bottom edge of the back of the radio is resting on the tunnel and hits on a piece of venting, so it physically cannot be pushed any further forward and that seems to prevent everything from moving forward3/4" to fit the center consoles together without a huge amount of force and stress. Should the back of the radio sit on top that vent pipe??? If not, I am at a loss on how get the center instrument panel to move forward enough to accomodate everything fitting.
I had the same problem in my 70 make sure all the wires and cables are out of the way and then put the armest /brake and the console in at once ,,i know its a pain in the rump I almost burned my car to the ground
Hi mar,
Is the piece of duct (I think it's called the floor diffuser) installed correctly?
Here's a couple of pictures of the console and radio in my 71. The back of the radio is tight against the duct.
Note that the back of the shifter console screws to the e-merg. brake bracket which should help locate it properly.
Regards,
Alan
Alan - Thanks, I'll look at the floor diffuser this evening. In your photo #2, the little hole in the back of the shifter console section mates over a little sliding screw recepticle on a piece of tunnel sheetmetal and the parking brake console has a hole that fits over that hole. So two pieces of trim have to be mated to one spot. I can get the whole thing to move forward, but I've got to force it. Are 68's as hard to work on??? I am considering a 68 coupe...
