Default Installation of Hurst Shifter

I have broken down and ordered a Hurst Competition Plus to replace the sloppy and worn original shifter on my 1977. I am going to pay a garage with a lift rather than crawl under on the still cold NE ground. For those who have installed a Hurst, how many hours should it take an experienced technician?

Does the reverse lock out still work with the Hurst?

Once those shifters are installed in a Corvette they are so tall they look like the belong in a Peterbilt.

I installed one in my 80 2 years ago and I love it. They make it with the short shifter handle that is almost the same as stock. The Hurts does ot have a reverse lock out but the spring tension to get into reverse will prevent it from going there by mistake. I did not have a lift to use so my time was longer than a garage time. It was about 3 hrs. Make sure your garage knows howe to adjust the stops on the shifter.

Good luck Joe.

Default Hurst Shifter

I put Hurst Shifter in my 73 Big Block over 35-years ago in the garage with car up on jack stands. 2-3 hours is realistic. I would never go back to the stock Muncie Shifter. If you want a stock appearing Muncie handle for the Hurst Shifter, I believe they are available.

One thing that is worth mentioning about the Hurst unit is that since it is basically bolted directly to the side of your transmission's tailshaft rather than to a bracket which is attached to the frame all the chatter and vibration in your drivetrain tends to come right up through the handle. The Competition Plus is the best four-speed shifter available, though-you can beat the hell out of it without breaking it and its action is very direct, very positive without being stiff and notchy, and if you just gotta have an OEM-looking stick there are stock-appearing handles available from all the Corvette suppliers. I just got a stock black chrome ball and adapted it to my Hurst handle...best of both worlds.
