Default Trivia question...and I dont know the answer

Why is it that brake lines that lead out from the master cylinder are wound in a spiral before going to thier designated locations?

Nope...sorry, That is for chaffing protection so that if something comes in contact with the brake line and starts to rub the brake line will not chaffe through and you loose braking capacity. Its a safety thing.

Nope sorry. Flexability is correct. MC is tied to the firewall. Distribution block is tied to the frame. Since the body can move in relation to the frame, striaght lines will eventually crack. The spiral absorbs the movement.

Maybe you are talking about the thin metal thing wired around the brake line? That serves double duty as chafing protection (as you mentioned) but mostly it is to make bending the line easier without kinking it.

I have question that one if something is rubbing the break line coil or not its going to chaffe.but you do have to the flexability between the body and frame. If it were straight you would have a problem with fit between each car in assembly.

It is called armor spiral and is to protect the brake line from damage. PERIOD.

Uh...it's to confuse the brake fluid before directing them to an obscure wheel cylinder?

I think all are correct as we are talking about two different things here. The spiral metal thing that is around the brake line is for protection. But the loop in the brake line on some cars are to provide flex. So everyone is correct, even the confusion to the brake fluid :D

The spiral armor is also known as a "stone guard" or a "rock guard". Chuck

Thanks for the replies everyone. Just to clear it up, i was in fact, inquiring about the mannor in which the lines are run. Not the spiral wire wrapped around them. All good answers though. :yesnod:

Ahh, OK now I know what you are talking about and it is for flex. I don't know when GM started doing that but my 71 without power brakes dosen't have the "loops" in the lines from the master cylinder. Anyone know why that is??? Is it because I don't have power brakes????? That is my guess.
