I'm Lookoing to purchase Performance Plus System from
Vbp. I see their having a group special...30% off if three members
are purchasing kits. Anyone else in???
I've had my C3 for many years. During that time, I spent oodles of $ at places like VB&P for a variety of suspension mods. You can, too. But what I've decided is that all of these modifications make the car....different. Not necessarily better. If the car was put together by Chevrolet (in this instance), in a certain way, they did that for a reason. The engineers have made a carefully calculated compromise, considering the usage of the car by a wide variety of people, costs, etc. When you change the rubber suspension bushings, for example, to poly, you reduce the compliance in the bushing, which can improve the handling. But since the bushing is less resilient than the OEM rubber, you experience increased noise and vibration. Putting huge sway bars on the car front and rear made it handle like a race car, and ride like one too. I switched most of that stuff back to stock. I kept the 300 lb rear fiberglass spring, and a 1" front bar (from VB&P), and I found a 9/16 rear bar from a wrecked big block. And that's it.
That's my 2 cents.
From: the land of a never ending frame-off resto-mod. May Visa have mercy on my soul.
I have put on the performance plus system from Van Steel with some mods in the package. Although I am still in the process of finishing up a body-off restomod the system I purchased from VS is very similar to VBP.
I called VS before purchasing to ask about potential performance and rideability for the type of driving that I do. Based on their opinion I lalso installed fully adjustable QA-1 coilovers for the front and adjustable QA-1s for the rear.
With this set-up I feel fully confident in the ride and expected performance of the suspension system. I highly recommend that you call VBP or VS first before purchase so you understand how the suspension can be tailored to your needs.
IF YOU CAN GET 3 OTHER FORUM MEMBERS/FRIENDS TOGETHER, WE WILL GIVE EACH PERSON IN THE GROUP 30% OFF THE LIST PRICE OF THE PERFORMANCE PLUS FULL KIT AS WELL AS THE OTHERS.
I will call on Monday to clarify if three members purchase three different kits will we receive the discount.
I put VB&P's Grand Touring Suspension on my '79 about 15 years ago. It looks like that is about equivalent to their Grand Touring Plus kit today. There is probably agrain of truth in what gcusmano74 says, but the improvement overall in the way my car drives and handles was absolutely phenomenal. Yes I feel a little more of the cracks in the pavement, and yes the poly bushings squeak once in a while, but the performance and handling are vastly superior to what the General engineered. If you do nothing else, put on the fiberglass rear spring. That alone will improve the ride and handling about 2000% with no compromises of any kind.
If you don't want to give up the ride (mostly), the best mods to improve the car are f'glass rear spring, rack and pinion, 5 speed, and modern wheels, tires and shocks /:\
