Is the power steering flow control valve and spring drectly behind the fitting that the high pressure hose attaches to? If I remove the fitting, should the flow valve and spring be right there, and I should be able to pull it out?
I have been having power steering issues (as seen in this thread http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...ing-issue.html ) and have replaced the control valve twice with new, the cylinder once with new - once with putting the old one back on (it was fine before) A recent new thread talked about flow valves getting stuck, or being installed backwards. Today I decided to check out my pump, removed the HP hose and pressure union, and there is not a spring or valve behind it. Could this be? I never removed the pressure union until today.
My steering worked fine before, just leaked all over the floor.
The valve is pretty much universal, so any valve out of any pump can work for you. What you may have trouble with is figuring out the right pressure. A small, washer looking shim sits on the end of the valve and is what determines the pressure at which your pump is operating. They come in various thicknesses. I would try a NAPA or Carquest and see if you can buy the individual pieces. If you contact Jim Shea on this forum, I'm sure he can tell you what pressure you need to be at for your car and a whole bunch more.
