Default What do you guys think?

A buddy of mine purchased a beautiful 79 out of Florida from a gentleman that has Parkinsons.

This gentleman was told when he bought the car that it had 411 gears in it, so here's the issue.

Removed rearend and found that it had 355's in it.
At 60 mph with a 245/60/15 BFG,this punk is reving 3100 rpm. Trans does shift nice and all 3 gears.

I'm thinking that it might have a stall converter in it. As far as I know no one stamps converters to let you know what stall they are.

So, I need some of the trans gurus to give me their thoughts on this. I don't know anything about what's in it for internals. Only other option that I was thinking of is putting in a stock converter or going 200R4. Motor is of the very mild build.

Alright, let's discuss cause I'm getting all spassed out with this.

Go 2004r. I did the swap and love it. Makes it a lot better driving it on the highway. I used a 2200 stall converter. Good for normal driving. I have just a stock motor right now but doing a lt1 swap. After all said and done I have about 1100 dollars into the trans swap

Why not leave it alone. I had a 1979 L-82 for many years. The TH-350 with the stock 3.55:1 rear end was a nice combination. And yes it did rev just over 3,000rpm at 60 mph.

*Edit* - Just noticed. A punk? They are beautiful cars.

How often is he going to use the car? When he does use it is he just going to "cruise" local? If it's going to see limited use that's mostly local leave it alone. If it's going to see lots of highway miles the 200R4 will be a welcome addition.

A high stall converter will have no effect on engine speed at 60 mph.

Use the RPM calculator here: http://www.1962to1965mopar.ornocar.o...erpmchart.html

If your tach is off by a few percent, then the engine speed can be right.

You can get taller tires, or swap the rear for a higher ratio (or both). Acceleration will suffer, but your engine speed will be lower.

Hey, its only gas.

Those numbers aound about right for a stock '79 with 3.55's. I had the same combination in my '79 before I put a 700R4 in it and it would rev over 3000 rpm on the highway.
