Default side yokes

While bleeding brakes I noticed the dreaded side yoke play when grabbing the tire at 6 and 12.outside of the axle clips coming off what else causes this kind of wear.just curious before I tear into it in the future.I have noticed nothing in the way of noise to amount to anything.no leaking.the u joints are tight.the guy I bought from replaced the u joints in the half shafts 2,500 miles ago.

It is the end of the axles that wear. They rub up against the cross pin and wear down. This is what causes the in and out movement. I have six axle stubs on my bench. 2 are new 1 is worn .009 the other side was worn .030 and the last two are really worn. One is down past the clips so it is probably worn .200 or more and the other side was at .080.

That's what I figured.new yokes, bearings, seals.you would think he would have noticed the play when pulling out the axles to replace the u joints.the new side yokes I see for sale in the vendors catalog are they usa or China junk.I see rebuilt ones but would rather have new ones.volunteer vette seems to be the best price for new.

OH NO YOU DON"T!!! there was a outfit called Yogi Behr (pronounced bear).....that redid those yokes with a hardened steel end on them I have ~100k miles in 16 years with them in my '72.....perfect end play still....

IF he is still in business, do some searching...you probably can't beat the quality or service ....but it HAS been 16 years....

Are the side yoke bearings easy to replace.might as well while I have it apart looks like tons of fun to remove the cover.how much time Im I looking at on this job.never pulled a rear end out of a c .3. But car has little to no rust underneath at all.frame looks like its 5 years old due to factory undercoating.anything else to change while I have it out.
