well, pulled motor last night-i had decided on rebuilding it--but........MY BLOCK IS CRACKED!!!!!!!!!!!looks like a crate for me--i was originaly thinking the "enigine factory" 383 for $5300, but afew of you told me over priced. how about a ZZ4?
i also got a good look at my front suspension--not bad at all--i do have to chnge my steering parts, but generally pleased about everything else.-oh well, just blowin off steam!
Wow, that sux... If you're serious about a crate motor, you can't really go wrong with the GM series.
Here's a couple of good links to do some shopping... http://www.sdpc2000.com/http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/
I really like the 502s but don't want to change rad, shroud, etc... so I keep looking at the ZZ4 or 385 with the "hot" cam.
Sweet and hard to beat!
 :D
Good luck
Sorry to hear the block is cracked, but now you can get into the engine compartment and give it a good cleaning before you drop a new motor in. I really like those ZZ430/450 motors, wish I had the money for another Vette to drop one into. You can find nice crate motors for well under 5K.
If I were seriously considering a small block crate, I'd probably go with GM's HT 383 ... reasonably priced, forged crank, 4-bolt main caps, great warranty, strong right outa the box on 87 octane, awesome potential.

jesus christ, $5300 for a 383? My 468 didn't cost that and it's putting out over 600 hp.
Quite a few people have been happy with the ZZ4. If your block is cracked, the ZZ4 is a hot little engine for the money.
After looking into the GM Crate Motors, I decided on the ZZ4. I did not get the hot cam, but it has unbelievable torque, and real peppy. I had to change the water pump. It comes with the long neck version, and I swapped it for the short neck, so my belts would line up. I also had to buy the flywheel, as my old one was not compatible. It was a straight forward installation, and have not regretted it for one second. If your bolting it up to an automatic transmission, it comes with the flex plate. You will also have to get the oil filter adapter.
All in all, the total extra I had to buy was around $200.00.
