Noob trans question..
My 80 has a rebuilt Jasper 3 speed auto trans, I was told that it should have a "lock up converter" which will make it feel like it has another gear at speeds of 40-50 mph. Is this "lock up converter" the same as a torque converter? And can one of these converters be added to a trans which does not have one?
I'd like to add one if possible (before the future manual conversion) as the engine seems to be screaming at anything over 40 mph.

You cannot add a lockup converter to a transmission which is not designed for the lockup function. A 'lockup' converter has another hydraulic clutch inside of it which [essentially] directly connects both elements [pump and turbine] in the converter, so that there is no efficiency loss from the fluid coupling in the converter. For that clutch to be activated, it has to get a hydraulic pressure signal via another passage in the input shaft; and that signal must be sent from the valve body. If the main part of the transmission cannot send the signal to turn on the lockup clutch, you can't have a lockup feature, even if you put a lockup converter on your transmission.
