I've done some research and it looks pretty good so far.
I know I need to do something about the lock up converter electrically.
And the Transmission support.
But is this what I'm looking for?
You're on the right track. The 2004R will bolt up to your engine, and you can also use the stock cross member. If your trans is in otherwise good condition, I would install a Transgo shift kit as a minimum.
I put a 2004R in a 77. I used the stock crossmember but I had to do some small grinding near the trans mount to let it clear. Or Bowtie overdrives sells a tubular crossmember for it. Is the 86 trans electronically controlled? I'm not a transmission expert but does the tv cable control the lockup? I thought they were not electronically controlled until the early 90's.
2004R's are not electronically controlled, but do use an electrical signal from a remote switch to lock up the TC. The TV cable does not control the lock-up.
There is a lot of very good information on these transmissions on the turbo Buick sites, and Bow Tie Overdrives has good info on their site as well.
