I, with the help of my neighbor, are going to be replacing the valve cover gaskets on my '82 in the next few weeks. I don't want to mess around with them again anytime in the near future. I have heard that silicon is the way to go to really seal them up.
Question, do you use the silicon by itself or can you also use the silicon with a gasket (ie using the silicon just to give the gasket a little help)? BTW, is cork or other reccomended? Oh, the valve covers are original and I am not going to be replacing them.
Thanks for all your help.
Now I need to figure out what I am going to do about that not so nice scratch/gouge I put on it the other day.
After thoroughly cleaing the surface, use a thin bead of silicone seal to glue the gasket to the valve cover but none between the head and the gasket. The next time they need to be removed the gasket will stay with the valve cover and usually can be reused several times without problems.
I just replaced mine on my 81 two weeks ago. I used Felpro cork gaskets. There are two thickness, use the thicker one. I put a little silicone on the valve cover and NOT on the head, I has worked fine. Good luck, its an easy job.
I just did this to me CE. make sure you CLEAN the valve cover surface. I used sandpaper to even it out, and check for them being warped. Then pre-soak the gasket with motor oil. I just put a little on them and smeared it around with my finger. No leaks for me now :D
