Default 74 L48 Distributor Help

My Distributor is making a funny noise like a clicking sound. Is there bearing in it or something else? Any help?
Thanks,

Pull the rotor cap then lift up and down on the rotor. If it moves the dist. needs to be shimmed/re-shimmed. Also look at the inside of the cap and see if the rotor is damaging the contacts.

They have brass bushings in the housing. As well as the up and down movement, you need to check the side play which can be tricky because the advance will want to rotate. if there is any noticable side play the bushings are shot.

Sounds familiar from last summer for me. Once they start down that road (yes it starts with clicking) they literally destroy themselves; tach drive debris gets into bushings, shaft is scored, etc. Mine was rebuilt but you do need special tools. Best to buy a re-built one. Or go Chinese if you wish.

Paul, I'm convinced you just like to take things apart... to get terrific pictures!

Difficult to diagnose from here. But we all know the tach drive gearset is relatively fragile. Pull the crossgear and look at it carefully for metal shavings or broken teeth. Often the mainshaft is damaged as well when the crossgear breaks, so you will have to replace them both. If there is any binding in the tach drive cable, it will overload the gearset. So you first have to make sure the cable spins freely, or you will be doing the same job again next month. Pack the gearset with grease when you are done.
