Default Mech temp gauge hook up??

I pulled the plug from the side of the head and once the steaming hot water slowed a bit I attempted to hook up the mechanical gauge but it is much smaller than the fitting in the head. What do I do?? Do they sell adapter fittings or is there another spot??

It's probably a 1/2 inch hole, you can get an adapter at most auto parts stores, the inside diameter is probably a 3/8 inch. I just had to do the same thing with mine.

Thanks, I'll check for that in the morning. The instructions say that teflon tape may be used???? Why is it an option??

I'd use some sort of sealant on the threads or you might get a leak. The threads are NPT which are tapered and should seal under most conditions with just a little pipe dope, teflon tape or even NeverSieze. Too much sealant might interfere with the ground needed with a normal electronic sending unit. Since you are installing a mechanical temperature gauge it shouldn't be an issue.

If you have the parts in hand, go to your local auto parts shop and give them your old temperature sending unit and your new mechanical unit. Tell them you want an adapter to fit the mechanical unit into the block. My local parts store (not the MacParts store like Auto Zone) had brass adapters for about every application. You will want to use teflon sealer, either the tape or the liquid, on the mechanical sending unit, but NOT on the original electrical unit. The reason is that the body of the original unit grounds to the block and you risk having a bad ground.
