Have the occasional backfire on the passenger side. Im pretty sure its because of the racing cam that came with the engine (not too sure exactly what the cam is, just have that the guy i got it from put a racing cam in it). I checked all the spark plugs and wires, fuel/air ratio is good, timing is as good as i can get it, but i cant time it with the vacuum advance connected. Its a 1973 454 with hooker headers. I was wondering if anyone had a solution that didnt involve replacing the cam or doing an engine swap?

I think much more detail about the your above statement would help solve your problem.
I love these statements "I put a racing cam in it" What kind of BS statement is this. There is no such thing as a racing cam. That was meant to impress you. Find out what the specs are on the cam and find out why you can't time the engine with the vacuum advance disconnected. Sounds like the guy that sold it to you has no idea how to setup the timing and carb.
there is so much to installing a cam right. it has to be degreed and the timing chain/dots checked to be sure its accurate. you cant just slide it in. if he does not know the cam specs he sure does not know how to install one.
