I'm planning on starting a front suspension rebuild on my 78 in a few weeks. I have spent the last year planning and buying tooling - so far, I've found the best explanation for control arm bushing removal to be here:

Not having a press, I used a drill to cut up the rubber of the bushing. Then, slowly picked out the rubber piece by piece. It took a little time, but wasn't difficult. For the outer sleeves, I highly recommend using the air chisel with a couple squirts of PB Blaster to help.
I then sand blasted 'em, painted 'em real nice and took them to a frame shop to press in the new ones.
