I have searched a lot of posts on here and elswhere regarding Corvettes and water pumps and have found a lot of confusing info, but then again I am easily confused. My question is, can I use a long water pump on a 454 block going into a '68 Corvette, or will there be radiator interference? Thanks in advance ...(and I apologize for what must surely be a redundant question.)
If you use a long legged pump when the installation calls for a short legged pump all of your pulleys will not align. Why not just go buy the correct pump?
the cross member in front of the harmonic balancer doesn't have clearance for the longer (deeper) pulley that would be required with the long-legged BBC water pump since the plane of the fan belt would be further forward.

The pulleys I have fit with the long pump. That is what I would like to avoid is replacing not only the pump but all the pulleys. (Water pumps are relatively cheap; deep groove GM pulleys ain't)

So the long pump crankshaft pulley you have doesn't hit the crossmember?
The 454 is not in the Vette yet. It was built for a '72 Chevelle but not installed. Now the plan is to install it in the '68 Vette, so I need to find out if it will fit in without interference anywhere or will I need to change everything to short water pump configuration before I attempt it. Should have made that clearer I suppose. But then again I was going for 'succinct' which I apparently accomplished at least.
I've got a long pump set-up in mine, the cross member will need some work (cutting and welding).
Motor driven fan will not work either.

Thanks for that info. I posted earlier on here that someone had told me that I would have to modify the crossmember if I installed a 454 because the harmonic balancer would hit it. I bet they had that confused with the pulley set up on a long water pump. In any case I would rather swap everything out for the short pump configuration than modify the frame. Sure wish the economy was better; it makes it hard to sell this stuff on Ebay. Couple years ago I could have listed those pulleys for good money. Now they won't bring squat. Thanks again.
