Default 1974 A/C Problem

In 2005 I replaced my stock A/C compressor with a rebuilt one only to have the clutch lockup about 3 days later. I ended up buying another re-built compressor and several hundred more dollars to have compressors swapped & re-charged with R-12 (Yes, R-12) and it workd good for that summer only.

Last year, after a few years of No cold air, I decided to have it charged again with R-12. It blew fairly cold, but did not blow out the vents very strong. However, during a 500 mile trip, my engine overheated, but was ok when I disconnected the wire to the A/C compressor. What's up with this???

Now, I just bought a NOS A/C compressor.

What do I need to do to make sure that my 4th compressor (3rd after the original) does not go bad too?????

Also, how can I get it to blow colder & stronger out of the vents?

PS: I had the VIR and Pressure Hose replaced in 2000, although it was not used much since then.

Thanks !

MrVette..

It is quite unusual to go through that many compressors. But my biggest question is what happened to the first one?

It sounds to me like you need to evacuate the entire system before installing another compressor.
If a compressor goes bad internally the debris will end up in the AC system. About the only thing you can do is completely flush the entire system to remove any possibility of another failure.

You can upgrade the current blower motor to gain more air out the vents. http://willcoxcorvette.com/product_i...ducts_id=24497

IMHO,

Willcox

I did have the system flushed & evacuated in 2005, then had it re-charged last summer when it seems as though the compressor (when A/C was ON) caused engine to overheat. People I spoke with say the compressor would not cause engine to overheat. But then why did it run cooler after I disconnected wire from compressor?

Thanks for info on the improved blower motor!

The a/c system when running rejects heat thru the condenser in front of the radiator thus raising the ambient air temp going thru the radiator.
In short, your cooling system is not up to par to handle the higher ambient temp.
Start by cleaning the condenser and radiator externally well with degreaser and a hose and flushing the cooling system.

And after my last post.. I still say there is something amiss with your system to be eating compressors...
