How is it possible that my rear differential leaks? I understand that maybe the gasket is worn or the nut is not tight, but when it is filled isn't it only possible to fill it up to the nut?
I am going to be replacing the fluid for my first time which is why I really don't know.
Also, is this what everyone puts into it? How much? I've got a 1969
Leaks can be from the cover gasket or the side seals. Try to determine where on the rear end it is coming from. As far as the lube as shown, it is good stuff and pricy, but a quality Penzoil or Valvaline 80/90 weight 2 qts worth will work also. Go to a GM parts counter and get 2 bottles of the origional GM posi rear end additive, Fill up the rear end to the "just dripping point" at the fill plug with the lube and additive and then go drive around in a parking lot doing a couple of slow figure 8's one direction and then do them in the opposite direction. This circulates the lube and additive in the posi clutch packs. Carry an empty bottle of the lube because if a cop sees you they will think you are wasted or crazy. Good luck
Thanks all. Anyone have any tips for siphoning out the oil?
Well, one way is to take the car for a good long drive on the highway to get the fluid warmed up so it thins out. Then, remove the bolt that blocks the fill hole, and stick a piece of tubing down there and suck all the fluid out a mouthful at a time, spitting it out into a container to be recycled later. Be sure to wait for it to cool off enough that you don't burn your mouth with the hot fluid. Personally, tho, I prefer to use a Mighty-Vac, I don't like the taste of the old gear oil.
Good advice. I should probably invest in one as I know I'm going to have to do the brakes at some point. I've never changed it before, do you mix the two oils together when you add them? Or is this something with the instructions on the bottle?

I got my vacuum pump(not mighty vac brand, but essentially the same thing) at Harbor Freight for 25 bucks, it doubles as a vacuum gauge which makes it come in pretty handy sometimes, like for setting the idle on your carb.
If you mean the gear oil and the posi additive, you just empty the posi additive bottle into the diff, and top it off with the gear oil.
