Both my side yokes are leaking.. not dripping wet but wet. Is this a big job to replace the seals? I'm guessing I have to open up the differential to remove the yokes or can this be done from the outside? Is this a simple unbolt type of job or do I need special tools and shimms and etc... ? I'm leaning towards just leaving it BUT that feeling won't last too long and I'll want to fix it.. Any ideas?
I am with you on this one. I have one side that is leaking. I have to fill up the differential once a year, 9 months. It is more than I can do, and it is more than a cheap repair, so I just refill. Probably this year I will have to have repaired, because dripping is gradually growing.
This is a big job. The rear end must come completely out then the cover can be removed. Once the rear end is on the bench it is no big deal and the yokes can be inspected to excess end wear but if you can live with a slight leak let it alone.
It is quite an in depth job. The diff does have to come down so you can remove the cover for access the the snap rings to remove the side yokes. And who knows what else it might need while your in there. The CR number (Chicago Rawhide) for the seals is 3820419.
That's what I thought. I have to clean off all the caked on crud and check the fluid level. My guess is I'm low! I figure SOMEDAY I'm going to pull the engine and tranny to do some work.. I figure I'll tackle the rear end at the same time.. Thanks!
