Connecting rods have a higher boss on one side than the other. Do the small ones go together when installed? Just can't remember. Small block engine

I'm not sure I understand your question correctly, but here goes:
If you look at the cap/connecting rod saddle, one side will be beveled a lot more than the other. The non-beveled sides sit adjacent to one another on the rod journals. The bevels face outwards in order to clear the radius on the crank throw.
