I reinstalled the starter on my 77 and when I tightened the 'start' wire on the solenoid it touched against the spark plug wire gutter unbeknownst to me. When I went to start ... nothing. I fixed the problem at the starter, still nothing. I tested the neutral safety switch and power was not coming through the switch (thought I discovered the problem) so, I bypassed the NSS and still nothing. Could I have fried 2 things? The NSS and possibly the ignition switch on top the column? How does power take the route from the fuse block to the solenoid? Through the IGN switch to the NSS and then to the solenoid?
Confirm you have power first on the red at the ign switch, you could have fried a fusible link. Early 77s had some weird tap connections under the brake booster that fed the ignition switch, they used to get hot and melt.
I do have power to the NSS just not through the switch but when I use a jumper and bypass the NSS, I still don't get power to the solenoid. So, where does the purple wire go after it leaves the NSS?
so, power goes from the battery to the starter, from the starter through the bulkhead/fuse block to the ignition switch, from the ignition switch to the NSS, from the NSS to the solenoid?
...........which means the problem must be between the NSS and the solenoid via the bulkhead?
That's the way its sounding.
The harness in the car should be setup for a car with manual trans and auto,so there "might" be other connectors. The diagrams are not always perfect so check your purple on the inside of the car and then find it just outside the bulkhead and check it there. Let us know what you find.
