Default A plan to reduce the gas prices

This was forwarded to me ...sounds interesting. I've been avoiding Exon/Mobil anyhow...since I heard that a large portion of their gas is OPEC sourced as opposed to other companies like Conoco, Citco, and Sunoco to name a few which are primarily sourced from S. America.

Interesting...of course people have been saying it was going up...not sure if it'll hit $3/gal in the US...may be overspeculation....but if you can make the big suppliers hurt a little and drop prices to gain lost share...that idea certainly has merit.
_______________________________

Gas Prices, I hear, are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by
the summer, Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take
some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth, offered this
good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a
certain Day" campaign that was going around last April or May!

The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we
wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It
was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
BUT, whoever thought of this idea has come up with a plan that
can really work.

Please read it and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about
$1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $1.97 for
regular unleaded in my town.(California)

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have
conditioned us to think that the cost of a gallon of gas
is CHEAP at $1.50- $1.75, we need to take aggressive
action to teach them that BUYERS control the market-
place....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up
more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only
way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we
hit someone in the pocket book that WITHOUT hurting
ourselves. How?

Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas.
But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together
to force a Price war.

Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from
The two biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and
MOBIL.

If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce
their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will
have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally
millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!!
Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll
explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send
It to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300) ... and those 300 send it
To at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time
the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will
have reached over THREE MILLION consumers!

If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends
each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes
one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION
PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.

(If you don't understand how we can reach 300 million and all you
have to do is send this to 10 people.... well, let's face it, you
just aren't a mathematician, but I am ... so trust me on this one).
How long would all that take? If each of us sends this E-mail out
to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION
people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!

I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential,
did you?

Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to
you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES AND
KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK. YOU KNOW
THEY LOVE HOLIDAYS AND SUMMER TRAVELERS

This has NO merit. It is a commonly used market ploy to get more profits for another company. Most likely this rumor was started by another gas companies marketing group. The effect it has on us, the consumer, is Exxon and Mobile will raise prices NOT lower to make up for the lower profit margin due to slightly lower sales.....

Clint I don't doubt you're pt at all, if only a small difference is noticed...it would take a substantial "drop" in the business to warrant lowering prices, and then it still may be fought off. For example "the big 3" seemed to have figured this out in the car market...and have continued to drive prices up...yeah they run sales...but they don't get in market pricing wars...which is bad for their business and profits.

But this point would have merit if Exon/Mobil (or any big player) lost a lot of buisness and felt compelled to lower prices to try and gain back share. It would take a large market share loss...not just a few.

Yeah, a reputable buddy of mine (who own's another '68 BB) told me about this....

I know Europe is around $4 per gallon.... but Calif. is always about 0.50 cents to 0.75 cents higher than Texas.
But no matter what - I'll "fight" to the bitter end and eat food rations just to keep my BB on the street !
Even at $3 per gallon.....

What happens if no one buys Exxon/Mobil gas? The other companies that are now selling more gas does not have the supply to meet the need. So, they just buy gas from Exxon/Mobil. We need so much gas to run the country. The small guys cannot supply it. They have to buy it from the big guys, otherwise they cannot meet the demand. So you end up buying Exxon gas from Joe Blowe Service Station.

You buy it one way or the other way, but you still buy it.

Gasoline is not a renewable resource, thus as consumption increases and reserves decrease, the cost will go up. This is simple straight forward economics. Is there price fixing in the industry? Yes, there is as the crude oil industry is an Oligopoly, thus collusion is inherent. Having said that, if you want the price of gasoline to decrease, stop buying it. Yes, it is that simple. Start taking public transit, walk, bike, but do not bitch about the price of gasoline it is as expensive as it's elasticity is very low, that is people need it therefore if you want it; pay more. Not picking on you, I hope you don't think that, this is more of a comment for everyone who complains about the price of gasoline, but take no logical action to change it, fighting the gas retailers is not a solution, searching for an alternitive fuel source is. Ever heard of Hydrogen to power your car? Great idea, problem is that no one wants to use it as the capital costs associated are far to great, or are they?

Don't worry about that...not taking it as "Picking on me" I just got the email forwarded and posted it on the board...for discussion...which is the point of the board right. I agree with you, but I don't see myself trading in the old V8s for a honda or bike any time soon.
I was in Jerusalem, IS last year for work for a few weeks(before its as rough as it is now) and they were paying like $4/liter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! EVERYONE, if they're lucky enough to own a car...has to drive a little small car with a 4 banger...we really are lucky here in the US are gas is cheap compared to most places. :nopity

What, Honda. In that case disregard my last post    I wouldn't wish that on anyone, a 4 banger Ouuch. :D Hey, the next best alternative would be buying shares in Exxon, at least you'll make some money. :D

Ding ding ding!!! We have a winner! The total production of gasoline int he US is close to the total usage in the US. ALL that would happen under the proposed boycott would be that Exon/mobil would simply sell their gas to whomever needs it. If anything you'd see an increase because the gas would change hands more.

Folks, this is a bunch of noise :bs

Oil prices are dictated by market conditions, and the oil companies pass their costs on to us. Of course, they're quick to increase prices and slow to reduce prices, but beyond that, boycotting one seller over another is only going to affect stock prices, not gas prices! :yesnod:

Y'all are ignoring something VERY important: TAXES. We have the world's cheapest gasoline becuase our fuel taxes are lower than any other 1st world country. Even our friends in Canada pay twice as much as us to support :bs nonsense like Petro-Canada. And don't even get me started about Europe.

Be thankful about just how cheap gas prices are here :flag and stop complaining!

 damn this must be the smart people thread! All this economics and stuff, thank god im getting out of school in may! I say screw it, I know we have the best gas prices in the world, but why not take advantage of our own crude oil right here in the states. Any of yall heard of Alaska ;) And dont give me all that save the birds :bs becasue theyre only going to tap into like 1/100,000,000 of the state!

Another reason this wouldn't work is because Mobil on the run is the only true mobil convenience store.
There are many MANY independant fuel companies who pay for the banner (the mobil sign) and don't even sell mobil gas.
and then there are companies like BP and others who do sell MOBIL gas and don't fly the mobil banner.
So there's really no way to tell where the gas truely comes from.

Actually I blieve the Dept of Energy has the information on who (major companies) sources gas from where. Another interesting fact that was on a show like dateline (can't remeber) a few weeks ago, is that of the US only 1/5th of our oil comes from the OPEC nations (which of course is still a ton)....we get a lot of it from S. America and other sources. But that Europe and Asia gets the majority of theirs from OPEC countries, and that we have to protect their interests...obviously because of the world economy and we're depenedent on Europe and Asia for the demand of our products.
