In order to remove the BRAKE CONSOLE on my 76, I know I need to remove that illusive (screw?) that appears to be only accessible from the center cubby hole (?). Do I need to remove the (3) door assembly from the jack/cubby/battery respectively? Thank you in advance.
Actually no. Just the ones on the side and the secret one in the center cubby. Getting the center black trim piece which surrounds the actual parking brake can be tough without breaking it. Good luck!
Is there a trick to accessing the secret one in the center cubby? The engineer who thought of this one should be doing a life sentence, lol! Thanks for your advise.
I went thru this recently and yes --- the cubby door frame has to be removed. When I reinstalled my new parking brake console I DID NOT reinstall that screw. I simply used the four screws that secure the sides of the console. The PB console will not come off and if I ever have to work on the parking brake handle or if the next owner has to, he will not have to hassle with it. Be gentle with the cubby frame -it is very delicate and if yours is original - it will be very brittle and fragile!!!
BTW: when you reinstall power window switches, be sure to have marked them with proper up/down orientation. That way you will not have to go back and remove the PB console to fix it and have to hassle with that pesky screw
It's easier if you remove the compartment trim. Frame, doors, and glove box will come out as a unit. It's a bolt, not a screw unless Bubba has been there. The bolt provides a major reinforcement point for the e-brake console. It's there for a purpose, so reinstall it.

I was able to access mine through the jack compartment with a small 1/4" drive ratchet. It was tough and my hands were nearly too big to get it done. It will be much easier to remove the compartment trim unless you have fairly small hands.
The big welded piece of steel that the bolt screws into rests on the tunnel. No need to reinstall the bolt. The console is not a reinforcing structural component in the the grand scheme of things. Your console isn't going anywhere unless you squeeze your finger tips under the rear edge of the console where it meets the rear carpet and give it a strong yank.

with Noonie!!!
Not sure if yours is the same as a '69, but in my case, I just removed the drop-in "box" that goes over the jack in the right compartment. With the "box" out, you can get a ½" socket on the bolt at the rear of the console and remove it, making removal real easy.
