I think I might have gotten a handle on it. I took the piston loose and it did need a little adjustment (I know I shouldn't have been trying to adjust it hooked up with the tires on), found the nut loose and no cotter pin - not sure if this was any cause - I also greased the other end.
Short test drive felt much much better - tomorrow, I'll take it to work (on roads I'm used to) and see how it feels.
THANKS TO ALL WHO GAVE SUGGESTIONS AND IDEAS - ALWAYS A BIG HELP
I forgot to mention - the left pulling problem developed after I did a terrible thing - stopped by a Goodyear tire store and asked them if they could align the rear.
After a couple of minute on the rack they told me the "slave cylinder" on the steering was very loose - I'm pretty sure they were twisting it - not moving it left to right. They also told me the one of the front lower control arm bushings had "walked out". I tried to ask the "boss" what the heck he was talking about - seems they didn't look at the back bolts to find they were so loose I nearly lost one bushing completely and the lower control arms were moving to the back giving the bushing the appearance of moving to the front.
They claimed they didn't do anything - I'm thinking maybe - twisted the grease out of the it- or????
