I recently bought some R-12 and a can of R-12 Oil Charge (I do not want to convert to R-134). This apply's to my C3 and my daily driver 89 Ford Crown Vic. I think it is best for me to go ahead and replace the A/C hose, but then I guess I will need to get an A/C pump to evacuate the system of air and moisture. Can someone provide me with detailed instructions on how to evacuate and charge my A/C systems and any special equipment I will need to get and at lowest cost possible? I also have manifold guages for R-12.
My Autozone stopped renting A/C vacuum pumps to avoid issues with non licensed people discharging and charging systems.
You can get a nice A/C vacuum pump from Harbor Freight. Instructions come with the pump. I have this pump and it does the job nicely. If you can keep an eye on this pump it goes on sales regularly.
For reference, the main idea of pulling the system into a deep vacuum, is if any moisture present, will boil off at this much negative pressure. Problem is, if you have a system leak, will just pull more air/moisture into the system as A6 compressor shaft seals are known to be leakers. If pulling a vacuum let thing's set for awhile to see if it holds. When recharging, probably a good idea putting in a UV dye shot, for easier leak tracing later.
