just my $.02 ...I have a chrome alternator as well as a water pump , and found that the metal castings are much more brittle than the stock units , In fact just changed pump due to a cracked hose outlet ...
Be very selective on what you buy .

I was pleased with the chrome powermaster I bought from summit. It was a 17294. I recently just sent it back to powermaster for a rebuild and they are some good folks. They took my old one that was damaged from Katrina and sent me a new one at 50 dollars off from the new price. The old alternator I pulled off the car to use the chrome was flood damaged to and I am looking it at least 80 dollars in parts to rebuild it myself.

I am very happy with the quality of the chrome 105 amp alternator I got from DB Electrical.

This Proform alternator has been working great on my mouse motor with electric fan and fuel pump for a few years now: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PRO-141-657/
Absolutely no rust or chrome chipping whatsoever...looks to be a copper, nickel, chrome job. The red bowtie is a decal and can be peeled off if you wish.

I prefer polished aluminum myself.
TuffStuff seems so far so good for me. I have a 140amp on my serpentine system. It is a single wire hook up though.
Prices seem fair.

I installed the Tuff Stuff 7139 on my 74. I have a combination of polished and chrome parts, and it looks great and has performed well. Another thing to consider is the one wire vs the GM wiring harness. The Tuff Stuff brand is very well made and can utilize either wiring preference. Go with Jeg's, best one year return policy and great customer service, fast shipping. Anther option while you are at is to utilize the adjustable tension rod and relocation kit in lieu of the Alternator arm. Looks more solid to me.
