Default Adjusting the timing on an 82

Just asking. Can you just put it into diagnostic mode and not undo the EST wire? I know, disconnecting the wire is the right way, but why not just do the paper clip thing and put it into diagnostic. That way computer not in charge.

when you do the paper clip you are not suppose to have the motor on .but when you set your timing you need the motor on.

Oh, heck...what do the GM engineers know (you know, those guys that designed and developed that system)?

I think if the book says to not have the engine running, there is likely a very good reason....

You do the paper clip thing when you are adjusting your tbi's and, obviously, engine must be running to pull the vacuum. Are you telling me I should not put it into diagnostic mode when balancing tbi's?

What book and where?

Seems like I remember from the crossfire injection forum, the instructions are to put ecm into diagnostic mode.

Patiently awaiting reference to the book that you easily quote as a reference.

all plug in code checkers say to not start the motor .why this is i dont know .you can if you want to .i was just following directions .if you have done this and it did not hurt anything ,good that way we wont worry if we start the car by mistake .when i balance my tbs i do not use the computer .i use a manometer at idle .

Yes, I do to. In VERY brief terms, get up to operating temp, put in diagnostic mode, remove IAC connection, plug the whatever intake on the tbi, and then use a water vacuum guage to adjust tbi's until balanced. I like to check them after everything re-attached, etc. and see what the computer adjusted results are. Also adjust the tps not using, of course, the paper clip thing. Wish I could get back to the crossfire resources, but Ken73 got put out with me and banned me for life.

okay you are useing the diagnostic mode to check how its running .that is not needed to adj the tbi setting . if the manometer is used the car should run well .
