Default Fuel Tank

Will a later 78-82 fuel tank fit in an early 70-72 C3. The early ones are 18 gallons and the laters are 24 gallons. I would think not due to the different rear body style but does anyone really know if this is possible.

I am pretty sure, due to the shape of the tank and location of the filler, that this would not work.

I sent a 78 and a 70 tank to Bloomington but they are still packed in the trailer, if they aren't too deep I'll get them out and take a pic of them side by side.

Gordon,

The 78 - 82 tank is a larger tank and while I've never tried it, I don't think it will work for you.

There is quite a hefty size difference and I don't think there is room for the larger tank.

I went to this website and it shows the 70-72 w/ EEC as a 24 gallon tank. Hmm....

I don't know where these sites get their info, but that is not correct.

From the 1984 1953-1982 parts book:

70·72 Y (350, 454) W/E.E.C, (EXC;' SP. H/PER.. H.D.) ,. . . . . . . 3967749 TANK (18 GAL)

Now you can squeeze a bit more in this tank but not 24 gallons.

Gordon, I couldn't find it, but back in the late 60's Vettes had an optional 36 gallon for cars intended to race. It came in the big block stereo and heater delete vettes. I couldn't find the part number. But this is the 24 gallon like in my 79. I've gone to the pump and it took 25 to fill it all the way.

You might have to get rid of your style spare tire carrier.

the 36gal tank option came out on 1963 cars, I believe it was option NO3 and was not offered on "late 60`s Corvettes", you also won`t find one part number as the big tank was a combination of parts. here is a another number for you $7000 that is what an original 36gal tank is worth (repops are in the $4500-$5000 range), besides being extremely dangerous because it was made of fiberglass it took up ALL the room behind the seats.

Roger to that. I thought all tankers were coupes, also.

Also, to the the previous poster's tank. I did the math on the dimensions of the tank on the advance auto parts gas tank, nad it works out to be 30.4 gallons

38 x 15.75 x 11.75 = 7032.375 in3 / 231 in3/gallon = 30.44318182 gallons. Something wrong there.
