Hey Guys, I got a 1975 350. I have McJacks shorty headers on it. They are as straight as can be. Also have a set of IK 180 alum. heads. Never had a problem with headers leaking till a few days ago. I loosened the area where the donut is in the connection from headers to exhaust. Then I put in a new Fel Pro 1405 gasket. I did this twice and still hearing what seems to be a ticking or air noise. Seems to be coming from header on passenger side, but I really don't think its a header problem Could I be sucking air somewhere or does anybody have any other ideas. Car is running good so I don't think I have a valve or push rod problem, but I'm not saying there isn't. What can I check? Puzzled. Thanks in advance.

Has anybody ever doubled up on there header gaskets?
I mean the gasket between the header and the head.
Yep snugged them all from inside to the outside getting tighter each time. 2 questions, could something else be making that noise, and has anyone ever doubled up on header gaskets?
In the old days I used to use 2 sets of gaskets on my big block Dodge. On Chevy SB's I read that it helps to soak the gaskets in water for about 1/2 hour before putting them on. I did that on my 74 last year when I installed mine and I have no leak. I helps to seal as you tighten them then as they dry they match the flange better. So far it seems to be good this way.

Can you actually feel an air leak with your hand or by placing a crisp piece oif paper near it? Could it be a lifter out of adjustment, use a wooden dowel along the valve cover and see if any spot is noisier than the other areas.
If you take a good long piece of, say, 5/8" hose, and stick one end in your ear, you can use the other end like a stethoscope, very easy to track down header leaks and such.

Found the problem, I have a crack in the weld in between the 2 middle cylinders on the headers. The headers are only 6 months old and only have about 1000 miles on them. I'll be sending them back on Tuesday, The guy I bought them off will fix them I'm sure, he's a good guy. Thanks for your help guys.
