My driver's side rear tail light on my '73, L48 is giving me trouble. When I brake, the light that comes on is the dimmer light that should illuminate when the lights are on. When I turn the lights on and brake, the light goes out and I have no brake light on that side. The passenger side is working fine. So when I have the lights on, say driving at night, I have two tail lights. When I brake, the driver's side light goes out and the passenger side light gets brighter. If I'm driving in the day with the lights off and I brake, the passenger side is really bright and the driver's side is dimly lit. I seem to have a wire crossed somewhere, but it is quite a pain to look up in there. Would it help this post if I attached some pictures of the wiring behind the lights?
Any help would be appreciated. I would love to be able to fix this myself if possible.

What is the best way to tackle that problem? Do I have to do it from underneath the car? It is really hard to maneuver under there. On the one with a bad ground, I felt one wire coming from the light and just in a segment. It wasn't hooked to anything...almost like it cracked off. I can't see what color it is though. There are two other wires coming out of the light. I wish it was all apart like the other fellow showed in this post. It would make things much easier. I was trying to get a picture of it by putting my phone up there, but I was having a hard time getting a good angle. I wish I had a diagram or picture of that side with what it should look like. I'm going to try to get a picture and post it so someone who has seen one wired right can take a look at it.

Thanks a lot for the info so far.
Well...I just went out and monkey'd around with the ground...wiggling it around a little while trying to get a picture of it and I then check the lights and now they appear to be working properly. I guess I should clean them up and try to make sure this isn't a recurring problem. Thanks again for the quick and accurate replies.
