Default 1975 Water Pump

I'm replacing the water pump on my '75 because the bearings are going bad. I ordered a replacement from Advance Auto but it doesn't seem to fit. Looks like the shaft is too short. When I put the pulley on it rubs against the housing. I checked it against the original and it's about 1/2 inch shorter. Why would this be and where can I get the right replacement?

The correct pump for a 75 has Block to pulley face of hub = 5.795" with a 3/4" pilot shaft.
Compare that to your original working pump.
Advance can get the correct one.

Thanks noonie. There was a heavy duty pump listed but nobody had one in stock. Is that the one I need?

What's the casting number on your old pump? And the new one?

Casting numbers on the old pump are 04159 and 230100-046. I painted the new pump so I can't see them.

You just got a defective pump, someone screwed up pressing the hub on.
Order a heavy duty from Advance, Autozone or NAPA and don't paint it until you check it for correct.
They are all around 50 to 80 bucks for new.

If you can't read the casting numbers simply because of paint, neither is a GM pump, ie both are aftermarket jobber parts.
