Had the '76 out of the garage while I cleaned up abit. Pulled it back into the garage and shut it off while I went to grab my tools to do some timing checks and tried to start the car, no power. I have no power to anything, not the clock, lights anything. Checked the battery connected and with the ground off, 12 volts. Nothing powers up in ACC or On via the ignition switch.
on my 82 there is a connector[6 wires] that is behind the passenger motor head that goes down to the starter .if your car has that check there.if not go on down and check the starter for power.
Start with the battery, as had this happen more than once. Everythings fine one minute, then click, the battery just internally shorted out. Checking a battery with a meter open circuit mean's very little, as really needing a load on it. Most auto parts places can do this. Could be a fusible link inline, but not sure where on a 76'.
The 76 has a fusible link right by the left hand inner fender. Look at the firewall for a large red wire and then follow it. The link is inline with that red wire. If the link blows, it takes out all the power inside the car.
Well I was about to pull the fuseable link in the left fender well (checked and had 12v on one side) and replace it when I decided to hook the battery up again. When I did, the lights came back on. Tried to start the motor and got a click and the lights went out again. So I pulled the battery and put another one in and power came back. Started the car, ran until warm and shut it off. Waited a couple minutes and restarted and shut down a couple times, no problems. Apparently my battery went bad. After pulling it, I checked it with a meter and it read 130v!!!!?????
