All the key does is move a switch. If you had a momentary contact switch wired up properly, you could use the key like an "arming" switch, and instead of twisting the key the rest of the way to start, the button completes the circuit and starts the car. The wiring might be a PITA, but the basic principles of how it worked would not change at all.

Maybe I'm getting the wrong impression of what the OP wants but I would leave the column and ign switch as is,remove the purple/white wire from the ign switch and attach it to a separate pushbutton to fire the starter.

Yes, If you have to turn the key on just turn it
a little more and it starts, so why the push button,
Newer cars you don't have to use the key just the button
and the key fob is close
