Can anyone tell me where the horn relay is located on a '69 350 manual? I removed the horn push and when I connect a wire from the live button to the column I get a small spark and faint peep from the horns. I checked them independently and they work so I assume it's the relay.
I also want to send another member a photo of my car. Anyone know how to upload a picture?
If it is the same as my '72, it is located under the hood (bonnet), it is the junction point for the wires coming from the alternator and the wires to the fuse box.
PS - My wife comes fay Dundee, and I've been there and Glasgow several times, your vette must get many looks over there!
Check the search forum for pics, there are some very easy instructions, on how to post.
The horn relay, if same as early 70's, is on the drivers side front wheel well near the washer bottle/bag.
Hi c59,
The horn relay is mounted in the engine compartment on the left wheel's apron just below the the lip on the surround.
Here's a picture from a 71. It has a zinc (?) plated cover shaped like a toaster.
Regards,
Alan
PS: Hi sarge, you beat me while I was looking for the picture!!!!
Thanks for the info. Please tell your wife - I grew up in a town called Perth, and my first job was in a printer's in Commercial Street, Dundee in 1972. Glasgow is Scotland's biggest city, and all things considered, not a bad place to live. It does have one big disadvantage though - so far it has rained almost every day this summer!
Thanks everyone for your help so far. I bought a new relay, carefully labelled it and fitted it. Still didn't work - then to my horror having just spent £56 or $90, I noticed a loose lead right below the relay, which fits perfectly into a terminal on the underside of the relay. I thought this was just a blank terminal on the relay until I saw the lead. When I connected it though I just got a continual squawk from the relay, which was strangely silenced by turning off the courtesy light. Same thing happened when I went back to the old one.
I'm pretty sure the leads are the right way round, but to confirm I've got the live leads going to the side terminals in two pairs, the thin wire going to the body side on the underneath terminal, and the thick next to it going to the engine side, and the one I discovered going to the terminal at the front.
It looks very much as if one lead just came off, but why the squawk, and how come the horn still doesn't work? Alan 71 - how did you upload the picture? I want to send a picture of my Chevy Apache to another member.
See if this paper helps to diagnose your horn problems. This paper also refers to the steering wheel and horn parts blowup drawings. http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/?p=909
This is the 1977-82 T&T Steering Wheel Blowup Drawing (You may find this blowup to be more accurate as to horn contacts.) http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/?p=991
I got the horn working and treated myself to a spin in the 'Vette this afternoon. What it seems to have been was not the relay, but the horn push assembly. I cleaned up the parts, but made the mistake of not re-connecting the horns after testing, so I assumed it must be the relay. Then I was baffled by the squawk as I didn't know about the key buzzer. It had never been connected, and no wonder because it goes off without the key being in the ignition, so every time a door opens, it squawks.
The horn works now, but only on one point of the horn push. It's a pity I didn't think of connecting the horns before buying the relay - at least I understand why it squawks now. Thanks to everyone who helped me, to Jim Shea whose diagrams were very useful, and to Avner for the method of uploading pictures. When I get it to work I'll show you some REAL dust under the hood!
