A noticed a noise in the rear while moving slow. I jacked up the rear & discovered I can move the passenger side wheel by holding the top & bottom. I thoght it was the dreaded rear wheel bearing but discovered it is the yoke moving in & out of the rear end. What would cause this & what is the fix ? I think I heard awhile back that there is a clip or something inside. Could I be so lucky ?
More than likely the stub axle ends are worn thru the hardened tip.I just got thru pulling my diff and cross member to change them.If it is the axles I would change both at the same time. Also change the seals.

What hardened tip? Thats a joke isnt it. During that era, I dont think GM hardened anything.
theres a bunch of posts on this here, search is your friend. not sayin that to be a hardass, but when i got my car this was the first major project i tackled. i searched the forum and found quite a few pages of posts, many with excellent info, including endplay specs for the shafts.
you need to drop the rear and remove the rear cover. look and see if the snaprings are present that are supposed to hold the axles in place. in my case both were missing - i cleaned the rear out thoroughly and couldnt find the remains of them. anyways whilw i had my rear out i replaced all the seals. with the clips in place my endplay was well within the specs i found here - i dont want to quote them from memory - but it will save u $$$ if your axles arent worn - only way i know to tell is to replace the snap rings and measure the endplay
