I wrap the starter on my '69 350/350 vette with a heat shield. Someone just told me that people who rebuild starters advise against the wrapping heat shields, because, according to the rebuilders, the shields hold heat and water which are bad for the starter. Has anyone else ever heard this?
I've always thought that "heat soaking" a starter was [pretty much] bunk. There's nothing in a starter that would allow heat to limit its function. Of course, excessive heat from a close exhaust pipe could cause degradation or melting of wiring insulation and result in a starter failure. That is why there are sheet metal 'heat shields' that ward off the 'excessive' part of exhaust heat. And the sheet metal shield will not hold water. Works for me....
P.S. My 'theory' is that "heat soaking" is merely an excuse for not finding the missing or poorly connected main ground wire for the engine.
wrapping a starter(electric Motor) with a blanket also keeps heat in.
Bad ideal....Do not use a wrap. use a metal heat sheild this will deflect engine heat and allow air to circulate. heat goes up= resistance going up.
an electric motor will loose power if the windings get to hot,
and draw more current.

When "some" solenoids get too hot they fail to work,I've always referred to this as "solenoid heat soak".
I believe "starter heat soak" is a poor grounding issue.
Starter "heat soak" is a solenoid issue ....not a start issue .... two ways to cure .... install in mini starter rated for headers .... or ... use a remote solenoid, installed away from the exhaust ...
i struggled with this issue after my engine build .... went to a really good mini .... and the problem went away ....
IMO wraps and shields are a waste of time and money ..... #justsayin
