Default 71 quadrajet fuel filter installation

I took apart my fuel filter some time ago to replace it, and since then I've worked on a lot of other things before I even tried starting the car. Once I've had the car started and let it sit for a day or so, it's hard to start because it seems there is no gas in the carb. I know I had a small leak by the fuel pump that I took care of this afternoon (fingers crossed), but I'm also wondering if gas is being siphoned back into the fuel line. There were a couple small pieces that I never reinstalled with my new fuel filter and I'm now wondering if those were compounding the problem.

Here is a picture of all of the parts that should be part of a qjet fuel filter install:

#1 - rubber gasket
#2 - plastic cap of some sort
#3 - spring that fits over #2 nicely
#4 - old fuel filter (notice gasket on top)
#5 - my new filter (yeah the back metal cap is off, I have it, it just fell off)
#6 - spring goes in first before anything I believe
#7 - adapter qjet to 3/8 input stainless steel line

Here's what I noticed
#1 will fit into the paper filter center. #2 fits into #1. #3 fits over #2.

What I'm not sure about is if I need #2 & #3. I didn't have them in when I was having a long start time because of lack of gas at carb. So maybe #2 and #3 help prevent siphoning of gas back into the line?

I don't recall if #1 came with my new filter or not, it probably did because the old one had a gasket on it and the new one without the rubber #1 on it doesn't have any other gasket.

Today's fuel evaporates more quickly than it did back in the day. I'm betting the fuel in your carb is just evaporating. You could install an electric fuel pump that would fill the carb when you turn on your ignition if you don't like cranking your engine to fill the bowl up.

I did read this. I'm wondering if the replacement fuel pump I bought is crap (no check valve). I bought it either at Napa or Advance, I don't recall right now. How would one know if the replacement pump has a check valve?

Fuel evap could be a big part of my problem. I've rehooked everything on the carb to the PCV and the fuel vapor canister in the hopes of keeping the fuel smell out of my garage. But ever since I've got my engine back to running this last month (June) since last September, I have a real big gas smell in my garage.

I just want to make sure it's nothing else before I chalk it up to evaporation.

You can simulate a perfect check valve by pinching off the rubber inlet line going to the pump. If this helps you probably have drain back.
If you want the check valve in the #5 filter to function you will need #2 and #3.
Make sure the open end is away from carb.

The open end of the filter is facing the fuel inlet line from the pump.

How do #2 and #3 go together with #5? That's what I'm trying to figure out. Spring #3 I assume goes on #2. But after that I'm lost as to how it would go together.

Does the 2+3 part go inside #1 somehow?

I think this may be the correct setup as it's inside the rubber gasket and stops before it pops out the rubber gasket opening:

Yes , spring goes in opposite hole then plastic check valve goes in and seals up against hole.

You got it. You should be able to blow the plastic off its seat

To get it in the filter you might have to push the plastic in a little with a pencil while pushing into the filter.
