My problem is far to low shiftpoints, especially for the OD (27mph).
I managed to get the govenor out and replaced the inner weight with the ones from my 350 govenor. (these don't have the added weights)
New weights are 10g, old was 15g.
I left the original springs, they are very soft, seems to be of white and violet color.
That increased the 4th gear shiftpoint to 45mph. very nice, but my valves floated at WOT.... (With the old weights it shifted at ca 3000prm)
Then I tried to replace the springs with the black/red supplied with the TransGo kit. These are much stronger than the original white/violet.
That brought me back to square one, it again shifts to 4th at ca 27mph.
It would be interesting to hear from others with the 700r4 what shiftpoints you get and possibly what govenor weights/springs you are using.
You probably heard this before, and took care of it before tearing the tranny apart, but it is critical that the TV cable is adjusted properly. You have to fabricate the correct lever on the carb, too. Using the TH350 kickdown won't cut it. The cable has to follow the throttle position just right, or you will have incorrect shift points and shift firmness. One click on the adjuster makes a noticable difference. Sounds like the tranny thinks you are driving at idle and shifting accordingly. The TV cable is hooked up, isn't it? :) Joe
I put a B&M shift kit in the 700R and it'll shift from 1st to second at about 3000 and 2nd to 3rd at 2500 which is low. Then I manually do overdrive becuase it will go at 45mph. My suggestion would be to look at the TV cable and manually shift it. These trans were meant for easy driving cars and not performance. A shift kit definitly helped with the lag. It shifts harder than my TH350 did. And the shift kit let 1st gear wind up higher than before.

Yes, TV cable should be correctly adjusted. I found that the 350 kickdown lever at my original Qjet has the same pull-length and geometry as the TPI throttle body.
The guy who rebuilt the thing was totally against performance. So he did a "stock" rebuild and I hated it. Shifted like a slush box. Anyway, the painless wiring kit that I hooked it up with shifts into overdrive at 45mph if I leave it to itself. I usually shift by hand to keep it from bogging the car. The goverener is stock. If the trans lives behind my new engine I'll redo the weights so I don't have to manually shift all the time. I think heavier weights will let it spin up further.
If it shifts to 4th at 45mph and at 2.5-3k at WOT it's very different to mine. I don't think I can get to that regardless of which weights/springs I use...
To increase shiftpoints you use lighter weights/springs.
Obviously my car is really bogging when going into 4th at 27mph...
I think that maybe a mechanical lockup might be better for non computer applications since this allows for individual lockup adjustment. Electrical control force lockup as soon as 4th gear is active, it's more like upshifting two gears at a time.
If your trans is stock you should consider installing a Corvette servo/0.500boost valve/TransGo with the new engine.
I just knocked all the weights off my governor and then ground off more weight still....there was a shift kit installed by the rebuilder....TV cable is properly adjusted, shifts fine now....got to knock one hell of a lot of weight off that governor though....
Btw: I just did some tests with new springs and it now goes into 4th at 35mph and shift at WOT without valves floating. Best result so far. This is with the light weights.
I have it all documented in the 700r4 article, tech section.
I put one on my edelbrock carb and it totally changed the way my trans shifts. Also need to be careful that you are getting enought T.V or you will fry the 3rd gear clutch pack.
I will be re-installing my 700R4 soon. I'm anxious to start the process of perfecting the shift points. It will be a tedious process of trying to balance adjustments in three areas, the valve body, the governor, and the T.V. cable/plunger.
With some guidance from my transmission builder, I think that near perfect shift points can be achieved. (I HOPE!)
