Had a chance to follow the wife home so I decided to check my speedometer. It's off by 5 to 10 mph.. (Never ask the wife to help do something like this.. ) Anyway, can this be recalibrated or do I replace. I'm thinking it could be tranny Gear, Speedometer or the cable.. The cable gave me problems causing a jumpy speedo and it's been greased so it doesn't jump..that bad.. but I think the speedo has been off since I've gotten the car.. (Didn't think I was going that fast..  ) Is the tranny gear easy to find/replace.. price? place?.. Should I bring it to a tranny place to get recalibrated.. How is that done..? Any help? Thanks!
This site can help you determine the gears you need. Not too hard to replace them - they are available from Zip, and I imagine GM might have them, too. http://www.bgsoflex.com/speedo1.html
Oh, and don't pay any attention to the paragraphs at the top of the page - they're for another model of car... :) Just use the computations below. Hope that helps a bit.
How hard to replace the gear in the tranny end? Mine must be striped cuz I can hook a drill to the tranny end of the cable and the speedo reads fine but hook it to the tranny and nota.
I am not sure if there is diff tranny gears but there are different size speedo gears. In the ZIP catalog they give a way to determine which gear to buy but you have to know the gear you have in it it first then use their guide to determine which gear will work.
Does your odometer work? Is it accurate? Pick a section of road and check it against mile markers or some other set distance. Do it for several miles if you can. If it'a right and your speedo is off, then you need to have the speedo calibrated. If the distance is off the same amount as the speedo, percent-wise, then you need a new transmission gear. If it's off a DIFFERENT amount than the speedo, then guess what! You have a speedo that's out of caL AND you need a new transmission gear!
All the above is true, assuming you have the same diameter tires that came on the car from the factory. If not, as most of has have changed to either taller or lower profile tires, then all bets are off..... Using a calculator will get you close to a "better" tranny gear if you have changed tires.
