Grinding noise in rear end
Hello everyone!! I hope someone can help me. I have a 1976 automatic and it started making a loud grinding noise coming from the rear. I spoke with the local corvette shop who told me to put the rear end additive in and do the figure 8's. I did that but the noise has not went away. The noise is a loud grinding and it only happens when in low speeds when pulling away from a stop then once I get to a higher speed the noise goes away. Do I need a new rear end or is there something else that could be going on?

It sounds like you may need a new clutch pack in your differential or new u-joints. My experience has been that the additive helps reduce the noise when you start rolling from a stop and into a turn. The rear wheel on the side of the turn rolls much slower than the outer wheel, and the clutches spin at different speeds. That's why they ask you to do figure eights. If you hear the noise going straight from a stop, it's probably not a lack of additive. I'm not aware of any test that can tell you whether it's a u-joint or clutch pack. The u-joints are much, much cheaper than a new clutch pack, so you may want to try that first. Hope that helps.
