i just noticed that the 2 sets of 3 lights just under the radio, the lights on the outside of each set(closetest to the doors) is on??? i took out the front grilles to paint them so i disconnected the small front round lights in the grilles..is this why??? what do those end lights signify?? thanks,,,,,
Of the 2 set of 3 they are:
outside: sidemarker/directional/parking lights
middle: Low beam
Inner: High beam
If you took the grills out and removed the parking light assemble with it chances are you disconnected the fiber. It will look like a rubber grommet with a thin wire attatched to it.
You mentioned you noticed this after painting the girlls. Do you notice them lit during the day and off at night? If so then what is happening is the end of the fiber is picking up ambient light and it shows up on the console. There are no "lights/bulbs" in there at all it is just reflected light through what is nothing more the heavy test monofiliment.
Hint Hint: That works real well if one needs repairing or replacing :D worked for me :D

The fibers run from the light bulbs to the console under the radio. At night, when your lights are on, all the fiber optic lenses inside the car should light up and when you signal for a turn, the respective lenses should blink. This lets you know when you have a bulb that needs replacing. The ends of the fibers can get "dirty" and when they do, the result is a dimmer image inside the car. If everything is working, it looks pretty neat at night....for the driver of the car. The passenger doesn't get the same effect as the lenses are aimed at the drivers eyes. Pretty cool for the late 60's eh? We now have computers to tell us this sort of information but for 30 years ago, this was pretty innovative.
