Default Checking defferential lube

Simple question, How do I remove the square plug on the differential to check the oil? Do I just use a socket? It's on a '76.
Thanks

I use an open end wrench on mine. It was either 5/8 or 11/16 . It`s just a
threaded plug, it`s easier to remove if spare tire carrier is out of the way but it can be done.

You mean that the plug has a square hole in the middle right? You just use a 3/8" drive extension for your ratchet. Take a pic and clean all of the dirt and grime out of the hole before you put the extension in. That way the extension will go all the way to the bottom of the hole and not slip out so easily.

My 72 is just square. No hole inside. I had to use an adjustible wrench.
And definately lower the spare tire carrier. makes it much more easy

I actually can get a socket on it. I'm trying to remember what it was but I believe that a 12point 19mm will work, not the easiest thing to check on the car that's for sure.

Careful with the socket so it does not round off the edges. There is a specific socket for this job. It is a Craftsman that is a 1/2" drive, 5/8" in size and has 8 points so it forms a square no matter which way you put it on. Sure there are other brands, but that is the one I used.

To check level, have the rear level, take off the cap and the rear gear lube should just run out.
