Default 454 starter question...

I swapped in a 454 into my '74 which originally came with a 350. The 454 came out of a dump truck. I cannot seem to get the starter to make full contact with the flywheel. It only reaches about 3/4 contact with the flywheel and grinds. Does not turn the flywheel. I don't think it's a question of shims cuz that would only move the starter up or down but not forward like it needs to.

The guy who swapped it in made it work only once after all the shimming done. The starter is for a '74 454 BBC. The flywheel is for a 454 automatic. Not sure if I must count teeth on flywheel or what. I haven't a clue where to start. I called Ecklers today and got put on hold. Perhaps will try tomorrow.

Any advice?

Does the flywheel have a large counter weight on it?

This would indicate it is for an externally balanced motor.

Are the bolts on the starter straight across from each other or are they offset?

I think the distance from the starter bolts to the fly wheel are the same on SB and BB motors so the distance shouldn't be an issue.

Could it be a week Bendix on the starter not spinning it out there far enough?

I don't remember off the top of my head if the flywheel has an offset or not.

If its out of a dump truck are we positive its a 454 and not a tall deck 466 (or something like that). I'm not sure it the starter for the tall deck motors were different from the normal BB's.

Just throwing ideas out there.

What is the bolt pattern on the starter? Is it the straight or offset? The 454 should have the 168 tooth flywheel and would require the offset pattern starter to make contact.

After messing with a similar situation time and again, I put a new flex plate on. Haven't had the issue since....

I would double check and make sure you don't have a Tall deck block.

Is this automatic or Manual trans? IF automatic make sure you have the offset in the ring gear toward the engine. the flat side of the flexplate should point toward the trans....

"about 3/4 contact with the flywheel" Define this statement ??

if your saying the starter teeth engage , shimmed properly but only moving back into the flyweel teeth, about 3/4 % of full gear meshing with flywheel.
that is about right. you should be using the staggered starter, with a "454" externally balanced flywheel. 427 flywheel is internally balanced.
