If you have the correct starter you will never use shims as they move the starter away from the ring gear....only a suggestion, try a cast iron nose starter {427} if you have a 153 ring gear......

I got it to turn over with no shims today. As of now I'm going to drill out the bolt hole on the outboard side because it looks like it has been repaired. I dont think the starter is being held tight enough and it is torquing out of place. I'm going to drill through and place a bolt and nut on to help keep it secured tightly.. Although it started fine a minute ago, I have to permanently fix the problem. I can't keep going through starters.

I charged the battery and had no shims in and it kicked over. I have a feeling though that it is still torquing the starter enough to break that cone. Any thoughts?

You might want to look very close at the block,I've seen a few blocks crack at the starter mount. Too many shims , slightly loose starter and brace missing can screw things up badly, along with the wrong starter bolts.

I've cleaned it and examined it thoroughly for cracks. I did not see any around the outside or in the threads. Thats when I noticed the outboard side had been repaired. There is a visible difference between the threads on the outboard and those on the inboard. It seems like there is less thread running the length. Thats why I was planning on drilling through.
